You know how they say “fashion repeats itself”? Well vintage fashion isn’t the only thing making a comeback. My fiance and I have been collecting vinyls and between the ones his parents gifted us to the ones we’ve purchased ourselves, I think we have almost 100 vinyls. I haven’t counted though so who really knows how many there are lol
From the iconic sounds of John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme” to the crown jewel that is Nas’ “Illmatic” and don’t forget about Ms Gladys Knight and all her Pips, hunnie we have a little bit of everything.
I’m always sharing my collection and what I’m listening to with my followers on Instagram. I’ve gotten quite a few requests to share my favorite records and to even make a playlist! I’m not making a playlist just yet but I’m here to share a list of Vinyls I think every collector should have. So whether you’re a new collector or you’ve been doing this for years this list is perfect for you.
10 Vinyls I think every collector should have:

"Prince" by Prince
This album is a classic, might say this a few more times. I love to play it on a Saturday morning when the sun is shining nice and bright. Or maybe that’s just how it makes me feel-- yeah it’s one of those albums that makes you feel like it's a nice Sunny Saturday morning. Prince’s vocals are so soothing and electric at the same time. You’ll love having this in your collection no matter what your favorite genre is.
“Super Blue” by Freddie Hubbard
A classic Jazz album that you don’t hear too many people talk about. Freddie Hubbard is a master on the trumpet. Perfect for those nights you’re relaxing by yourself or with a boo or your crew.
"Illmatic" by Nas
Ok, Ty and I have a rule that we don’t want a whole lot of vinyls with music we can just find on apple music real quick but Nasir Jones will always be an exception. The flows of Illmatic sounds like he’s taking you through Queensbridge in the 90s. A MUST HAVE.
“That’s the way of the World” by Earth, Wind & Fire.
Oh man, this one right here is one of my go tos! I will put this on at any time of the day. The opening song alone will have me dancing all night/day long and it always puts me in such a great mood. Earth, Wind and Fire did what needed to be done with this one.
“Teacher Don’t Teach Me No Nonsense” by Fela Kuti
A record I put on when I want to hear rhythms that will vibrate through my body. There’s no way you won’t be moving with this one playing.
“A Love Supreme” by John Coltrane
My favorite jazz album of all time and one of my favorite albums in general. My wedding hashtag #AHuntSupreme was inspired by this masterpiece. A masterpiece that Coltrane presented as a spiritual declaration that his musical devotion was now intertwined with his faith in God.
“Kind of Blue” by Miles Davis
Since we’re on the topic of Jazz I certainly couldn’t leave out this giant. I played this album first thing in the morning, everyday, while I was in college. I loved hearing “So What”, the first song on the record, while I made my bed. I even used that song in a short visual I made called “Manda’s Ritual” which is apart of my series #MandaShortsSundays.
“Give me the Reason” by Luther Vandross
Luther Vandross has one of the greatest voices I’ve ever heard. We actually have 3 of his records but this is one of my absolute favorites. It has one of my favorite songs, “Because it’s really love”-- a song that is a must play at our wedding.
“The Ultimate Collection” by Beres Hammond
Because I am the proud Jamaican that I am, there’s no way I couldn’t include the legend himself. This record holds all of Beres’ greatest hits.
“Whatcha gonna do” by Stephanie Mills
If you love a good throwback you’ll love having this in your collection. It’s one of those records I like to throw on when I want some good music playing in the background while I’m doing some work.
I hope you enjoyed this list of 10 vinyls every collector should have! If you like my collection I made sure to link each record and my record player so you could shop them on amazon! I really hope this helps with your collection.
