5 simple things that made my Natural Hair GROW!

Before I share these tips on how I got my hair to grow let me give you all a brief backstory on my hair journey.

I’ve worn my hair natural my whole life. Yup, no perm or “cream” as we say in Jamaica. However, I began taking steps in taking care of my natural hair in 2012 when the natural hair movement was making its way up.

During that time all I cared about was how long I could get my hair to grow. Watching youtube videos of ladies with waist length hair and feeling the green eyed monster on my back because my hair wasn’t at that length. So I would do everything they said to do in those videos, buying some of the products they recommended, making the DIY hair concoctions and praying my hair would look and grow as fast as theirs did. It didn’t. In fact, doing all that stuff actually made my hair break off and at the time I didn’t even realize it. I thought because my curls were poppin' I was doing something right but I was oh so wrong.

It wasn’t until years later that I decided to stop all that mess and focus on one thing, the health of my hair. I told myself that I didn’t care how long my hair grew as long as it, as well as my scalp was healthy.

And you know what happened? My hair started to grow!

So, without further ado here is a list of 4 healthy things I did that made my hair grow.

1. I focused on the health of my scalp

  • If your scalp isn’t healthy, your hair will not grow. We put quite a lot of focus on our hair, so much so that we forget about the base, the root of it all, our scalp! Think of your scalp as soil and your hair is the crop, if the soil is bad you won’t reap good crop. Clean your scalp, regularly. Product buildup is real and prevents hair growth. If you think there might be other problems with your scalp, visit a dermatologist and have them check it out.

2. I use a herbal infused oil mixture.

  • I've never been one to believe that a product can make your hair grown but I think I might've been wrong. I order the herbs from amazon and infuse them with my favorite oils. I, along with my family and friends, have all noticed that ever since I started using it my hair has grown longer and thicker. I'm not saying it will work for everyone but my hair has been loving it so far and my hair doesn't like most things. Here is a link to the herbal mix.

3. I don't use one million hair products

  • You don’t need all those products that are being shoved in your face daily, trust me. It’s all capitalism anyways, which I’ll talk about in a future blog post. I currently only use 3 products when styling and one of them is water. I found what works for my hair and I stuck with it. No need to be a product junky when most of them do the same thing.

4. I do low manipulation styles and protective styling

  • If you know me then you know my hair is always in a twist out, twists or in my handy dandy ever so cute head wraps. Now I’m not telling you not to experiment with your hair-- Have fun sis! What I am saying though is give your hair a break every now and then.Don’t do two very tight hairstyles back to back. Give your hair and scalp some time to breathe and relax.

5. I never use heat!

  • Now this is something that not everyone will be able to do and that’s ok. Your hair can still grow and be healthy even if you use heat but do it in moderation. Don’t be out here getting the Kat Williams press and curl every week sis.

Hair growth has a lot to do with genetics more than anything else so be patient with yourself and your hair. Don't feel bad if you aren't seeing the results immediately, be kind to yourself. Also drink your water, eat right and work out. All of that stuff, as generic as it sounds, helps as well. Take care of yourself from the inside out.
