Let’s talk about hair removal, more specifically my favorite kind of hair removal. Sugaring.
With the weather getting warmer...eventually...hopefully...whew chile, NYC weather has been doing the most. It’s almost that season of “wearing less and going out more” with a mask on or whatever Drake said. With the increase in temperatures comes an increase in the showing of skin and with that, an increase in hair removal practices. Which is why I want to share as much information as I can about Sugaring.
Sugaring is an organic hair removal process. The sugaring paste is made out of water, sugar and lemon juice.
My first experience with sugaring was in November 2019 right before my birthday trip to Miami. I googled waxing places in NYC and Sugaring NYC was the first place that popped up. After doing extensive research on the process, what it is and how it works I was sold. I love the fact that it’s organic because I have sensitive skin and seeing the ingredients right there in front of me, ingredients that I could eat if I wanted to--that’s all I needed, to let me know that this would be perfect for me.
I’ve been going frequently since 2019 getting a brazilian on each visit. During my most recent visit to Sugaring NYC I asked my Instagram followers to leave me any questions they have about sugaring and I’ll be answering the most commonly asked questions below.
Q: Does Sugaring hurt?
A: Yes but not for long. The first time I went it hurt! That was because it was the very first time I ever got a brazilian. The second time I went it hurt less and even less after that. These days I hardly feel anything. I lay on the table and relax, almost falling asleep most times. Long story short, the more you do it the less it hurts.
Q: Why do you prefer sugaring over Waxing?
A: I prefer Sugaring over waxing because it’s organic and won’t cause any irritation to my skin. I love that it’s made out of ingredients I know and I don’t have to google the meaning of their names. I’m also a big fan of the way the hair is removed. Unlike waxing the hair is pulled in the same direction it grows which helps to decrease the chance of breakage and ingrown hairs.
Q: Why did you choose to go to Sugaring NYC?
A: It was actually the first placed that I saw in my search and they have a spot that’s very close to where I live in Queens, NY. The first time I went there I was really impressed by the atmosphere and aesthetic of the establishment. It smells amazing in every room you enter, the different shades of pink are so calming to me and before the pandemic they would have different types of candy in the waiting room. I’ve also grown really close to my sugarista who has been all up in my business if you know what I mean.
Q: How much does Sugaring Cost?
A: The prices vary depending on what you’re getting sugared and where you’re getting it done. I’ve only been to one place so I’m only familiar with their prices. Which you can find here.
Q: Have you ever done your own sugaring?
A: Yes, at the very beginning of the pandemic when NYC was still on lockdown and I don’t think I’ll be doing it again. I’ve gotten really good at making the paste and I was able to do my legs but I tried doing my bikini line and had to quit immediately. I know my strengths and that aint it lol
Q: How do you take care of the sugared area after sugaring?
A: Exfoliating about 2-3 days after your appointment. You never want to exfoliate right after the appointment because your skin will be way too sensitive. Also don’t forget to moisturize! You want to take care of the skin on your body the same way you would the skin on your face.
Q: Can you do bikini sugaring on your period?
A: I’ve never done it but it isn’t frowned upon and you won’t be turned back so the answer is yes! However, your skin will be much more sensitive while on your period, which can increase pain, so be mindful of that.
Q: Can men do sugaring too?
A: Of course!
I hope this Q & A about sugaring helped you to understand the process and why I prefer sugaring over waxing or shaving. If you have anymore questions feel free to let me know!
